I think most people are aware of Eric Carl's The Very Hungry Caterpillar. This book is classically used in younger classrooms to teach subjects such as days of the week, types of fruit, numbers, or the life cycle of a butterfly.
During my book talk, I posed the question "how could this book be used with students in older grades?" to my group. The idea of using this book as an art project was brought up. Students could do a project that involved paper tearing artwork. But the most interesting idea was to use the book for teaching other languages to your students. The basic vocabulary such as food and days of the week is perfect to use when working on beginning level foreign language learning. While reading the book to your class you could have your students translate these words in Spanish for instance. We also spoke about using this book to help teach sign language vocabulary to your students.

Bridget,
ReplyDeleteI absolutely loved this book when I was a kid. The illustrations are really what make this book so engaging for the students. This would be a great book for a classroom read aloud or a library so the students have access to it whenever they want to read it. Great book choice!

I really like your idea on how to use this book for older children! I think an art project using Eric Carl's paper tearing collage method would be fun! I often fail to think how children's books could also be used for older children. Great post!
ReplyDeleteI love the idea of using little kids book in a big kids classroom! I think using a book like this one is an inclusion class could offer a lot, the children brought in from the special ed class can help teach the sign language to the other children, if they know it. It is a great way to switch roles because the general ed children have a lot to offer and help but so do the children from the special ed rooms. It would be interesting to see how the kids react with the reversal of roles.
ReplyDeleteThis is one of my favorite books! I’m glad you decided to pick this book for your book talk this week :) As you said, their are so many fun activities you can do with this book for younger kids. For example you can teach them how to draw a Hungry Caterpillar or you can even have them re-tell the story and have them build it out of play doh. As for the older kids, the idea of using this book as a way to learn words in another language is fantastic. This book provides the basic words people usually learn first when learning a language so it would work perfectly.
